Strauss Don Juan
Hummel Trumpet Concerto
Brahms Symphony No. 1
Canadian conductor Jordan de Souza, former First Kapellmeister of the Komische Oper Berlin, makes his Kirklees Concert Season debut alongside remarkable Norwegian trumpeter Tine Thing Helseth in Hummel’s thrilling 1803 Trumpet Concerto.
Another pivotal early-career work, Strauss’ tone poem Don Juan captures the mythic libertine’s hot-blooded lust for life – and his submission to a melancholy end.
Brahms was well into middle age before he was satisfied with his First Symphony. It was worth the wait, paving a new direction for the form and winning over the critics, one of whom hailed it as “an inexhaustible fountain of deep pleasure”.
